If so you are looking more for design or accenting purposes. In this case your options are pretty much endless. You can use any size or style of lights and it will work.

You can find all sorts of different lighting options for gardens at any gardening or home décor store. Take some time to consider all your options before making any final decisions. Lighting will make a huge impact on the overall look of your garden so it is important to choose the right lights.

A wide range of decorative items are found at the stores. You may either buy them online or personally visit the stores to purchase them. If you love the avian, then items like bird bath and feeder may interest you. They come in different varieties like Dragonfly, Moose or Feeder, Oslo, Siena and Hearts Bird Bath. Some people love to decorate their backyard with fairy statues, animal statues and religious statues. Some even love the Oriental statues like the Chinese vessel, a meditating Buddha and Kwan Yin statues. If the area is huge, then you can also place an Obelisk in the middle.

Designer mailboxes, cute and funny signs like the rooster welcome or the cherubs welcome are extremely popular. Some people love the sound of wind chimes and wind bells. They indeed are amazing embellishments for your favorite place. Weathervanes made of metals like brass and copper can also adorn the backyard. It doesn’t have to be all serious though – one can have fun with silly or whimsical garden decor, such as using frog themed decorations in the garden.

If so, have no fear my dear – there are many items you can use to transform the average garden to the best looking one on the block! You can easily have one that all of your neighbors envy. The changes can be simple yet subtle. There is an infinite amount of trinkets that can make your yard unique if you’re willing to experiment and see what works best to compliment your unique landscape and of course the colors of the plants in your garden.

Speaking of colors:

A wind glass blown hummingbird feeder or whimsical chimes can add color and create life in your back yard. You can create a serene atmosphere with colorful butterfly stakes intricately placed around your favorite flowerbed. You can also spruce up your porch with simple hanging plants and decorative rod iron planters. And you can always bring a smile to your face by using funny garden signs, silly gnomes and clowns, and other whimsical garden decor, too.

Some of the most eye-catching decor can be hand made. So, if you are on a cheap budget have no worries! There are plenty of “how to” books and web pages that explain by specific step by step instructions how to make something unique.

Take for instance a hummingbird feeder; did you know one of these could be easily made? You can make it out of your favorite potpourri jar or closed glass canister. You can look up the directions on how to make one of these. You will not believe how simple and fun it is to make.

There are many ways to spice up your atmosphere. Whether you hand make it or decide to purchase is up to you. Your backyard should to be a relaxing escape, somewhere you go to unwind from a busy day of work. So, sit on your favorite hammock or rocking chair, and take it all in. Enjoy the sounds of nature and savor your paradise retreat. Remember, it is easy to take a garden from Drab to Fab! All it takes is a little imagination to spice up your garden décor!

You know what I’m talking about – like the “fat lady bending over” wooden plaque.

That was a joke! That wasn’t even funny when it came out in 1983, and it’s certainly not funny in 2010…

So what are some rad, silly garden decor items you can – nay, should – use in your home garden?

1. Metal Bugs. Who among us can hold a smile when set down face to face to a two foot giant metal grasshopper in the garden? OK, I admit – that actually sounds a little scary. So now imagine that the metal grasshopper is blue and yellow and has big happy puppy dog eyes and a smile across his face. Or think of a happy little lady bug, chillin’ above ground, with metal whiskers. And let’s not forget out free Mr. Bumble Bee, flying around (in place) looking as pleased as can be around all those flowers. Metal bugs for the garden are great!

2. Pink Flamingos. This is not going to be on the top of everyones list, but, for a list of silly and fun garden decor items, I think it’s merits itself in at #2. For if a big pink flamingo in the garden is not silly, then what is, my friend?

Warning: The potential for tacky garden decor just doubled. Be wary of how you incorporate pink flamingos into the garden! You’ve been warned.

3. Tree Art. You’ve probably seen these clever buggers before and had yourself a good chuckle. I’m talking about the tree art pieces that create a face on the tree by attaching to the bark two eyes and a mouth. Or, other tree art pieces create the trick of a cartoon-like bird having gone through the tree, by attacking the legs to the back, the winds to the side, and the head on the other side of the legs. Funny stuff! These are one of my favorite decor items to get a laugh from visitors!

4. Geeky Beaks. Geeky beaks are a line of whimsical garden decor items by Exhart. Made of metal, these garden birds will delight any garden’s mood! If you’ve not seen them, it can be hard to describe, so just imagine a silly, happy, bird goofin’ off in your garden, ready to make you smile. Note that some Geeky Beaks also stand tall at an impressive 64″ inches! This is an item that you truly need to see to believe.

5. Clever Plaques and Signs. This category is a little hard to include on the list, since it refers to possibly any and all garden signs and plaques. Nevertheless, a clever slogan or saying on a sign put in the garden can be quite the crowd pleaser. One of my favorite examples is a garden sign that stands only a few inches from the ground it’s jutting out of, with a simple two announcement on in: “Grow Dammit!”

Enough said!

OH – you mean the other kind of green – that kind that has to do with responsible energy use, recycling, and doing small but substantial steps that will help ensure the dirt and the air are healthy for generations to come? Well in that case…

Solar powered garden decor is right up your alley! It’s an idea whose time has come. And surely it seems obvious from the start; here we have items whose sole purpose is to sit outside under the sun all day and look good. Why on earth would we need to use power from an electrical socket to keep them running? Why not instead harvest the energy from the sun that is already pointing right at it?

And let’s not forget one huge bonus point every gardener I know likes about solar powered items for their garden: you don’t have to deal with an ugly power cord! Those power cords are like 50 foot snakes, winding around the whole garden in order to get to the power socket that’s usually somewhat far away.

Solared powered garden decor and other garden items simplify all these problems. By harvesting the energy of the sun on their own, once you buy them, you need only to put them out in the garden and the rest takes care of itself.

What are some popular solar powered items on the market these days for going green? Let’s take a look at a few.

1. Solar Water Fountains. Solar water fountains make for the most popular items of all the solar powered garden pieces. Water fountains are a wonderful addition to any garden anyway. Getting rid of the problems inherent on how to power an items outside that sits on the earth itself that’s not usually close in any way, shape, or form, to an electrical socket – well, let’s just say, it surely helped push the solar water fountain to the top of the list of popular decor items!

2. Solar Garden Lights. Now some might say that lights for the garden don’t really count as garden decor. I disagree. Functional items can absolutely be part of your garden decor. This is true for lights because the lights are designed with integration in mind. You can find various styles to match your gardens themes and tastes. Solar garden lights are no different, offering different designs for you to choose from to find the best that fits in with your garden.

Did I mention how clever it is that solar powered garden lights exist and you can easily buy them now?

3. Solar Wind Chimes Wind chimes have always been a classic garden item. They look nice and make wonderful, relaxing sounds, pulsating with the wind of the earth itself. What could be nicer? Solar wind chimes usually don’t use the solar energy to move the chimes in place of the wind. Instead, the solar energy is used to spice up the chime itself, such as adding colors to the chime. For example, a popular solar wind chime uses the suns energy to power LED’s which reflect from the chime outwards, creating dazzling light shows.

Solar garden decor items are only going to become more widely available. Most importantly, they will also continue to drop in price as companies pick up on the demand for these items and new technologies allow for the inexpensive harvesting of solar energy.

For a hobby that is green by nature, solar powered garden decor is a most welcome addition to my garden.

One area that occasionally gets a little controversial is the use of religious themed garden decor items. Is it OK to use such pieces in your garden?

The answer is, in the humble opinion of this garden decorator and writer, of course it’s okay to use religious themed garden decor! Is not the whole point of garden decor to express oneself? And if this expression comes in the form of religious decor, why would that not be okay?

It would be a different story now if religious decor pieces were somehow offensive or just not tasteful. But this is not the case. Any garden decor items with a religious bent to them are, broadly speaking, nicely done, and only respectfully represent the religious ideas surrounding their imagery.

For instance, garden statues are incredibly popular. One of the most popular types of statues is that of baby angels. These are so popular that they actually bear little reminder of religion in the minds of most people who see them. The same is not true though of statues with specific religios import, such as a statue of the Buddha in meditation posture or a statue of the Virgin Mary in prayer.

These types of religious garden decor can play a role in transforming the garden into a serene experience. They suggest taking a deeper look into the garden, taking a deeper look into the experience of the garden itself, when visiting. Some religious or spiritual traditions hold gardening as sacred in and of itself, such as Zen Buddhism, where the care and procurement of different plants is integrated into Zen metaphors and lessons on the meaning of Zen and the meaning of life.

The garden is not a place to start controversy or debate. But religious garden decor need not do any of those things. Religious statues and plaques are a wonderful reminder to stop and smell the roses, quite literally. While made only of earth and stone, they often suggest that the garden can be a spiritual place in and of itself if we only stop and pay attention.

Taking this idea one step further: why just walk around? Why not stop and stay for awhile?

And thus, the idea of garden furniture was born!

Instead of the stone pathway simple taking you on a small tour of the garden, consider having it lead to a central area where you could place a small bench, such as an iron wrought bench. This encourages people to see the garden not just as a visual or olfactory (smell) experience, but an overall sensory experience that they are a part of. In a spot where you’d place a sitting bench or other furniture, consider adding other pieces of garden decor to flair up the area. For example, people are drawn to the sound of water. This is why water fountains are so prized in the garden. Now wouldn’t it be nice if the stone pathway naturally leads to the bench which is within earshot or even arm’s length of a water fountain? Talk about a great place to read a book!

If you like the idea of reading in your garden, or just providing a place where folks can relax outdoors in the midst of the garden itself, consider upping the ante and placing an entire table set in the garden. Now obviously the garden needs to be decent sized for this not to overpower the garden itself. But if your design can accommodate a table and 2-3 chairs, a table set in the garden can look wonderful. Not only that, but its presence can solidify the garden as an extension of the home, and even as a social hub, if your friends are of the right crowd – i.e. those who appreciate a beautiful garden and the outdoors!

There are a few different types of table sets designed for the garden specifically. Broadly speaking, tables (and other garden furniture items) can be divided into two types. The first is made of wood that is specially treated to be outdoors, and as such, can withstand reasonable weather conditions. (But you wouldn’t necessarily want to leave it outdoors all year round!) The other is furniture made of metal, such as iron pieces. Outdoor metal tables and chairs are very sturdy and long lasting. One issue though is the lack of padding on such furniture; to get around this, you can usually buy pillows and other padding for these chairs, but it’s not a good idea to leave them outside all the time, or else rain and whatnot will slowly ruin them. Consider using some kind of trunk or outdoor storage item that can be blended into the garden as a piece of decor, and then storing all padding for the furniture inside it!

The prominent use of garden furniture takes a large garden and even a decent amount of money to implement. For the average sized garden, many consider the addition of just a simple bench to be enough for their purposes. However you do it, your friends and family – and let’s not forget, you yourself! – will certainly appreciate having a place to sit and enjoy the garden from within the garden itself.

Having a garden in and of itself is a fun practice, giving you a space to express yourself working with plants and the earth itself. Garden decor builds on this, adding nick knacks, status, fountains, decorative stakes, even mirrors and lights, as part of the garden. With skill and an eye for artistic design, combining the right garden decor into your garden can create a little piece of magic!

Before getting started, here are a few ideas and considerations to keep in mind.

1. Map out your intention and plans for the garden. What is your overall theme or goal for using these garden decor and decorative pieces as part of your gardening? What “mood” or “ideal” are you trying to create? It’s not necessary to have these answers all worked out before starting, but it’s good to keep them in mind when starting out as sizing up all the difference options and choices you have for garden decor pieces.

2. Keep the budget in kind. It’s tempting to spend some serious money towards making the garden a wonderful place. But keep the budget in mind. Garden statues and other items can quickly add up to a large price tag, especially in relation to any additional home landscaping that may be done to accommodate the garden. Furthermore, creative use of less items can make for a much nicer garden experience. This is not a case where “more is always better”. Simplicity and the strategic use of decor items go a lot further than a crowded garden.

3. Go with quality pieces over cheaper items. Without refuting the point above, it’s better to spend money on quality items that will last years of being outside in the rain, snow, and other weather conditions, than it is to get sucked into buying cheap decor nick knacks that look nice but will break down relatively quickly. This is especially true for garden furniture. Because of the harsh conditions an outdoor garden is treated to via the weather, it’s worth it to spend money on quality items from the start, and have pieces that will last for the lifetime of your garden.

Garden decor is a fun, expressive hobby. More so than that, it’s an art! Getting started takes time, patience, and the willingness to experiment with different ideas and pieces. Keeping the above tips in mind though, your garden decor efforts will be off to a great start!
